Our New Poly-Tunnel at Shaken Oak Farm

We bought a small poly-tunnel four years ago to help in the growing of plants (especially peppers) for some of our products. It has done sterling service but a replacement was required. Commercial poly-tunnels can be very expensive and our policy about being as green as possible on the farm led me to investigating the possibility of constructing one using recycled materials. This led me to getting in contact with David Urmston, who has some experience in constructing tunnels, and asking him to build our new tunnel. The tunnel was constructed during the gales in the latter part of December 2013 and early January 2014. The material used was mainly sourced from recycled and reclaimed materials; the polythene sheeting originated from off-cuts from a pick your own farm, the old scaffolding bars from a construction company, the timber from off-cuts from a forestry timber yard and the only new timber from a sustainable source. Our thanks to David, who built it under very difficult conditions (it survived every gale!) and managed to keep smiling. David would be pleased to tell you more about his work and aspirations. The Red Lion Farm Shop

This year, The Red Lion Farm Shop joined our list of valued retailers. We are very pleased to have our products included amongst the range of high quality produce sold at this excellent shop. Tucked away behind The Red Lion, on the road between Watlington and Benson, this farm shop is a treat and well worth a visit. Run by Chris Collins and his able helpers one senses as soon as you enter that this is a true farm shop and not a glorified gift shop selling over-priced foods! The meat counter is a pleasure to behold and Chris’s knowledge about cuts and where his meat is sourced (all locally) is a delight to hear. Here is someone with real passion about food, who wants to encourage us to buy locally and support the local economy. The shop also has an excellent selection of cheeses, fresh bread, eggs, vegetables and preserves. I can personally vouch that the bacon is some of the best I have ever tasted and the sausages are meaty and wholesome – bringing back memories Mustard of those tasted in my youth!
